UNICEF Executive Director Visits South Sudan
Catherine Russell, Executive Director of UNICEF, concluded a visit to South Sudan on December 7, 2025. During her visit, she highlighted the urgent need for enhanced protection and support for children affected by ongoing conflict, climate shocks, and mass displacement in the country.
Escalating Challenges for Children
South Sudan continues to face a complex humanitarian crisis marked by escalating violence and instability. These conditions have severely impacted children, exposing them to risks including displacement, malnutrition, and limited access to essential services. Climate-related shocks have further compounded these challenges, worsening food insecurity and disrupting livelihoods.
Call for Government and International Community Action
Russell urged both the Government of South Sudan and the international community to intensify their efforts and make sustained investments to protect children's lives and well-being. She emphasized the critical importance of coordinated humanitarian response and long-term development strategies to address the root causes of vulnerability among children in the region.
Focus on Sustained Investments
The UNICEF Executive Director stressed that short-term interventions alone are insufficient. Sustained investments in health, education, nutrition, and protection services are essential to ensure that children in South Sudan can survive and thrive despite the ongoing crises.
